Pilot vessel accident near Emäsalo island resulted in the death of both pilot cutter operators aboard

“I would like to extend my deepest condolences to the relatives and co-workers of those who died in the accident, and thank everyone who participated in the search and rescue effort,” states Kari Kosonen, CEO at Finnpilot.

Yesterday, at 4:58 p.m., Finnpilot Pilotage Ltd.’s pilot vessel L242 overturned outside of Emäsalo island near the northern pilot boarding position.

Despite the Border Guard’s efforts to right the overturned vessel, it sank during the operation. Divers were able to recover the bodies of the pilot cutter operators from the sunken vessel.

The pilot cutter operators were Finnpilot employees, who had been on their way to retrieve a pilot from a pilotage assignment. The cause of the vessel capsizing is unknown.

“This is a truly devastating day for Finnpilot. We are working with the authorities to determine the causes of this tragic accident in order to ensure the safety of our employees in the future. Procedures to that end are already underway,” emphasises Kosonen.
